Today is December 6, the 27th anniversary of the Polytechnique Massacre.

In Notes from a Feminist Killjoy, her new book of essays on moving through the world in a gendered body, Erin Wunker expands on Nicole Brossard's idea that the Massacre was not committed by a "lone wolf." The Massacre -- and its remembrance -- is not just about "M.L. alone, with his anger and his gun," Wunker writes. "This is about the history of misogyny." December 6 is about the particularities of that day -- the murder of 14 women whose names we recite every year -- but it also fits into a much wider, and deeply ingrained, spectrum of violence.

"Notes from a Feminist Killjoy" is an answer to what is needed now -- a self-consciously contingent rejoinder to the question of "who needs feminism?"

Survivors and allies gathered on Thursday evening in Toronto to share stories, show solidarity and demand reform in the criminal justice system after Jian Ghomeshi was acquitted of all charges.

On Thursday night in Toronto, allies and survivors gathered on the steps of Old City Hall to support victims of sexual violence.

The rally and march was organized by several Toronto-based groups, including the Centre for Women and Trans People at Ryerson University, the Canadian Federation of Students and Interval House, in response to the verdict in the Jian Ghomeshi trial delivered Thursday morning.

Since members of CUPE 3902 went on strike last Friday, there has been very little coverage in the mainstream media that accurately conveys the demands of the striking workers.

CUPE 3902 represents 6,000 teaching assistants (TAs) and graduate course instructors at the University of Toronto. I am a Teaching Assistant in the University's English Department and thus a member of 3902. I don't speak for the Union or for all those who are on strike right now. But I do hope to clarify some of the basic issues as I understand them, and as they have been poorly represented across major news outlets.

British Columbia's Okanagan Valley is a breathtaking, 20,000 square kilometre strip of sagebrush-topped hills that slide into narrow lakes, where southwestern desert morphs into mountainous lake country in the space of an hour's drive. It is the hub of fruit growing and winemaking in B.C., industries that have been significantly (if at times invisibly) transformed by the North American Free Trade Agreement. It is also home, for eight months of the year, to 1,500 temporary migrant farmworkers.

Confession: I am not a full-time vegan. The last time I went totally meat and dairy free was the summer after I graduated from high school when I was working as a camp counsellor. I ate a lot of fake tofu chicken fingers and my legs were covered in mosquito bites. Just when I thought I might begin university as a full-blown hippie, the smell of bacon called me back to the omnivorous fold.

Over the years, though, I've grown less and less dependent on meat. A lot of meals that I make these days are unintentionally vegan, and when I do eat meat and dairy I use it as a garnish rather than the main event.

For the modern capitalist consumer, it's easy to feel as though you have no control over what you put in your body. Most of the food we eat is produced by a global system in which the average vegetable travels thousands of kilometres to our plates, a system governed by international trade agreements that privilege mass monocultures grown with the help of cheap labour, pesticides and fossil fuels. Only buying organic, locally grown ingredients is a better choice from an environmental and health standpoint, but total commitment to this diet remains a luxury available only to the wealthy.
