As fires rage across California and floods displace tens of thousands in China, communities in Saskatchewan have become the latest sacrifice zones of the oil economy. After a Husky Energy pipeline spilled a quarter of a million litres of oil into the North Saskatchewan river on July 21, North Battleford and Prince Albert have shut down their water intake from the river, introduced water restrictions and begun relying on small reservoirs.

The Lancet, the world's leading medical journals, diagnosed climate change as "the biggest global health threat of the twenty-first century," and prescribed tackling climate change as "the greatest global health opportunity." Any day now, Enbridge could begin using the 40-year old Line 9 pipeline to pump toxic tar sands to the east coast. While Line 9 ends in Montreal and Enbridge claims it is for domestic use only, residents in Maine have exposed Big Oil's ultimate goal of export. Meanwhile, an upcoming legal appeal by the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation has highlighted the lack of consultation and violation of their rights.
