Interview with John Dougherty, an investigative filmmaker whose documentary Flin Flon Flim Flam delves into the growing opposition to mines due to human rights abuses.

When award-winning journalist and filmmaker John Dougherty discovered that a copper mine was planned right in the middle of a sensitive biodiverse ecosystem in southeast Arizona, he wanted to know who owned the project and what their track record was like.

His research led him to Flin Flon Manitoba and a Toronto-based company called Hudbay Minerals. What Dougherty discovered was a shocking record of environmental degradation and human rights abuses. The following is an edited excerpt from rabble.ca’s recent conversation with him.

An interview with Myeengun Henry from the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, who is part of the group presenting a constitutional challenge to the Supreme Court of Canada against Enbridge's Line 9.

Myeengun Henry is from the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and is an elected band council member with the health portfolio. He is manager of Aboriginal Services at Conestoga College, where he teaches a Native Studies course. He also teaches about traditional medicine at McMaster University. Henry is among a group of people who are presenting a constitutional challenge to the Supreme Court of Canada on the basis that Enbridge's Line 9, which runs through their traditional territory, does not meet the criteria for proper consultation with affected First Nations.

I understand that the Supreme Court case is to be heard on Nov. 30.

Wendy Goldsmith is an activist and social worker from London, Ont. She is on one of the Women's Boats to Gaza. Goldsmith's boat didn't make it out of Sicily, but they remained in contact with the Zaytouna-Oliva up until they were boarded and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli Occupation Forces.

On board are 13 women, including Mairead Maguire, the 1976 Nobel Peace Laureate from Northern Ireland, Fauziah Hasan, a doctor from Malaysia, and retired U.S. army colonel Ann Wright.

The Zaytounda-Oliva is one of two boats to leave Barcelona. The second boat, the Amal-Hope, had mechanical issues and had to be replaced. Because of the delay, Amal-Hope II, the boat replacing Amal-Hope, lost the small window of time needed to pick up a full crew. As a result, it was forced to remain in port in Messina, Sicily.
