For a couple of weeks now, the University of Toronto (U of T) community has been debating, engaging with, and responding to the comments made publically by Jordan Peterson, professor of psychology, in criticizing Bill C-16 and the charged idea of "political correctness."

Opponents call it "the Bathroom Bill." In a special session last week, the North Carolina state legislature passed HB2, officially called the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act. Gov. Pat McCrory signed the law that night. The new law denies transgender people use of the bathroom, changing room or locker room that matches their gender identity. Resistance to the bill is fierce, and growing daily.

The Senate should pass Bill C-279 without amendments and without delay

An amendment passed by a Senate committee would weaken Bill C-279 protection, and would allow federal agencies discretionary power and impunity to discriminate against transgendered Canadians.

Saskatchewan becomes the first province in Canada to fly the transgender flag

Saskatchewan became the first province in Canada to fly the flag of the transgender community on March 31. Though the action is symbolic, it comes at a time where the acceptance of transgender individuals has often lagged behind those of the wider LGBTQ community.

The flag was flown to mark the International Day of Transgender Visibility, meant to promote awareness of the trans community and the human rights issues they still face.

On Bill C-279, state violence and institutional transphobia

On Wednesday February 25, the Canadian Senate voted 6-4 to amend Bill C-279. Bill C-279 is federal Bill that seeks to bring rights and equality to transgender Canadians, sponsored by NDP MP Randall Garrison and which passed in the house of commons two years ago.

The amendments the Senate wants would essentially render Bill C-279 useless.

Not so long ago, the incredibly talented Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie explained that we need to destroy this idea that tradition is some kind of natural phenomenon and accept it as man-made.
