A snap decision by frontline police officers in Washington, D.C. on Inauguration Day led to an altercation between supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump and masked protesters. The riots culminated in the breaking of windows and burning of a limousine which became a symbol for resistance to the reactionary agenda of the incoming administration.

The title steals the last line from Tar Sands Action's morning blog ("It's going to be very good day for the 99% of us who aren't an executive at TransCanada.") with the update that it WAS a great day. By official count 12,000 of us participated in the Day of Action to surround the White House. Some called it a "giant hug," some said we'd "encircle the White House to show President Obama that he has the support he needs to say NO to the Keystone XL pipeline" and at last night's meet up and strategy session Canadian author and activist Naomi Klein said that some could also call it "a house arrest."

Maude Barlow joined more than 12,000 peaceful demonstrators from across North America today, to surround the White House in a shout out for climate justice. The following is her address at the action.

Hello water warriors! I say water warriors because, although there are many reasons to oppose Keystone, none is more pressing than the destruction of water that takes place in tar sands mining and refining.

Tar sands oil uses and destroys massive amounts of water. In Northern Alberta, the used water is held in giant tailings ponds so poisoned that birds landing on them die.

Activists rally to put the kibosh on the Keystone pipeline

The phone call to organizers was a bittersweet confirmation that the story was being carried around the continent. It came from activist Tim DeChristopher -- new folk hero and symbol of the increasing risks taken by the climate justice movement, after being jailed for peacefully disrupting a land sell-off to the oil industry under the Bush administration.

Across from DeChristopher's cell in a penitentiary in the small town of Pahrump, Nevada, where he has started serving a two-year sentence, a small television was flickering images of the protests in front of the White House in Washington, DC in late August.

Sometimes a job description just doesn't tell the whole story.

What with the need to balance the budget by 2013 and everything, there just aren't as many promising positions on the government of Alberta's job board nowadays as there used to be. Still, it's worth keeping an eye on it. You just never know when an interesting posting is going to pop up.

For example, sometime in the past couple of days a posting for a position with the vaguely defined title of "Senior Official" in the Ministry of International and Intergovernmental Relations cropped up on the site.
