A new danger descends on Canada

The Leap Manifesto continues to gain support as an alternative to the reckless fossil fuel agenda of premiers like British Columbia's Christy Clark and Saskatchewan's Brad Wall.

As a result, they've taken to attacking the Leap in increasingly strident tones. We say: Bring it on.

As a young left-of-centre New Democrat and environmentalist hearing the news that Cheri DiNovo would be running for NDP leadership, I was ecstatic. While I made the conscious decision to remain an undecided voter (a novelty rarely afforded to leftists in Canada) for at least a few months, DiNovo being the first to make her intentions known would certainly indicate we are in for an exciting leadership race.

Okay, here's the proposition -- you can have a good job, decent pay, lots of overtime, but only if you give me your grandchildren or maybe your great-grandchildren.

Would you make this deal with the devil?

This is pretty much the choice currently offered workers by the captains of the carbon extraction, transportation and burning industries.

On Earth Day, look -- then Leap

This April 22 will be unlike any previous Earth Day. World leaders, including Prime Minister Trudeau, will gather at the UN in New York to sign the Paris Agreement on climate change. This is good news because the agreement is a commitment to hold the increase in global temperatures to "well below 2.0 C above pre-industrial levels" and promises efforts to limit the rise to 1.5 C.

In the days since the Leap Manifesto Resolution passed at the NDP convention in Edmonton, there has been a lot of talk about who precisely is most harmed by the fracturing of the NDP along pro- and anti-Leap lines. I want to argue that we are all hurt by this moment.

The Leap Manifesto has recently found itself at the centre of controversy, with pipelines in particular acting as a wedge between various factions and regional representatives of the NDP.

The Manifesto effectively calls for a moratorium on :infrastructure projects that lock us into increased extraction decades into the future." As a supporter of the social and ecological principles that undergird Leap, I can get behind this statement.
