http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/northern-territories/yukon-party-strikes-again-0

After an eight year Peel Watershed Commission supported by 80% of Yukoners, the ConservationSociety and the four affected native bands the Yukon Party has come down firmly on the side of the Mining industry.

Under the Commisions recomendationd 79% of the area was to be pretected from developement. Yukon Party reduced that to 29% for a more "balanced" land use. Unfortunately, from what I understand, roads could be allowed through protected areas if they were "temporary". If you travel the back country it's easy to find unused roads that are very old but still usable. The land heals very slowly.

http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/northern-territories/yukon-party-strikes-again-0#commentsnorthern territoriesMon, 27 Jan 2014 05:01:34 +0000hobyirwin106192 at http://rabble-6.rabble.caYukon Party strikes again
http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/northern-territories/yukon-party-strikes-again

As expected the Yukon Party went against all logic, 80% of Yukoners wishes, a 6 year Peel River Commision Study and 4 native bands to come down firmly on the side of the mining industry.

Originally the Commisions report put 80% of the Peel River Watershed under a no mining catagory. Unfortunately this report came out just before the last Territorial election and the Yukon Party sailed through that without ever stating a position on the report. After the election, predictably, they rejected the report looking for a more "balanced' position.

http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/northern-territories/yukon-party-strikes-again#commentsnorthern territoriesPolitics in CanadaYTMon, 27 Jan 2014 04:34:44 +0000hobyirwin106191 at http://rabble-6.rabble.caElections Nunavut

Tununiq MLA James Arvaluk has resigned from Nunavut's legislative assembly for health reasons.

Arvaluk notified the assembly of his resignation on Monday, officials have confirmed.

Arvaluk, 63, had a heart attack and a stroke last year and spent weeks in an Ottawa hospital before returning home to Pond Inlet, where he has been recovering since.

The assumption was that, as long as Larry Bagnell, a relative left-Liberal, held onto the Yukon riding, there was little chance that the Dippers could make a comeback. Can this change now that a presumably hard-right Harperbot has taken the seat?

This thread is at your (Robert) Service for any discussion of that question.

New Brunswick taxpayers will have to pay up to $4 million to repair a major bridge in the Northwest Territories that was partially built by a New Brunswick firm.

A construction audit released by the N.W.T. government this week has identified a number of problems with Atcon Construction's work on the the Deh Cho Bridge project, which is being built across the Mackenzie River.

Atcon was the Deh Cho Bridge's general contractor until January 2010, when it was removed from the $182-million megaproject because it couldn't agree on terms for the second phase of construction with the bridge's developer.

http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/northern-territories/nb-government-pay-repair-nwt-bridge#commentsnorthern territoriesWed, 19 Jan 2011 15:09:35 +0000Caissa81109 at http://rabble-6.rabble.caYukon NDP Leadership Race

In the NWT where the Dene are now facing a hunting ban on the Bathurst Caribou herd there has been much talk about who has the authority to ban hunting between hunters and wildlife managers. In Nunavut, Inuit have seen dramatic herd declines in North Baffin and in the Thelon region as well.

There can be no doubt that wildlife conservation measures strike at the very heart of indigenous rights. The history of wildlife conservation in Canada is a sordid one. Some of Canada's first wildlife conservation measures were developed by a racist judge, Judge Prince in Ontario in the late 19th Century, specifically to prevent aboriginal harvesting.

http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/introductions/nunavut-partly-blame-bathurst-caribou-ban#commentsnorthern territoriesbarren-groundcariboudiamondendangered speciesenvironmenthabitatminingnorthwest territoriesnunavutwildlifeSun, 31 Jan 2010 14:54:31 +0000lauracbowman72687 at http://rabble-6.rabble.ca“We don't have no vegetarians here”
