All in all, in Poland mass women’s protests, which have no precedent, immediately forced the Parliament to give up the idea of tightening the law on abortion. The governing party capitulated publicly in the face of the explosion of mass discontent. The scale and force of the protest astonished everybody. The Black Protest is an important confirmation that the tradition and culture of mass political protest is being reborn in Poland at the moment.

Here in Montréal the January 21st demonstration in solidarity with the march in Washington (but in general, for women's rights and against misogyny0, will take place at 11 AM at Place des Festivals.

A personal comment - I certainly support this march and the solidarity with the US movement, but I think it is AT LEAST as important to continue to support the many movements against violent misogyny, including femicide and rape, and religious and political control over reproductive rights, repression against LGBT+ people, undervaluing women's work, Indigenous women's movements against racism, colonialism and misogyny and the other struggles that have come to the fore the world over in recent years, and not only in the US.

Canadian Women's Researcher arrested in Iran

Canadian researcher Homa Hoodfar, a world expert in sexuality and gender in Islam, has been arrested and is believed held in Tehran's Evin Prison. Hoodfar was in Iran researching women's public roles. She was visiting during recent elections in whicn many new women candidates were elected to parliament.

We suggest an alternate system that will feel restorative for victims. The adversarial system doesn't allow for victims to heal. Survivors must be empowered to participate fully, on terms equal (but not necessarily identical) to those upon which accused persons participate in our justice system. For example, accused persons are entitled to vigorous legal representation. A sexual-assault complainant should be guaranteed the same representation and protection. But currently, if the victim shows up with her own lawyer, the response of the system is suspicious and even overtly hostile. Crown attorneys will not openly share witness statements with the counsel representing the complainant.
