http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/youth-issues/screening-red-square-on-black-board

All are invited to a free screening of RED SQUARE ON A BLACKBOARD

This inspirational film takes us to the heart of the 2012 Quebec student strike to oppose tuition hikes, one of the most important popular mobilizations in Canada’s history. Followed by a discussion about the impact of austerity on youth around the world, with: Roxanne Dubois, Community organizer for UNIFOR, formerly with Canadian Federation of Students and Christian Pépin, Student activist in the 2012 strike, now a doctoral candidate in Political Science at York U.

Oh there's a lot of history here, sure. There's the formation of CASA, there's unpleasant lawsuits, there's a bunch of stuff I have no idea about. But here's the latest controversy just in time to celebrate Frosh Week (and a lot of it is playing out on rabble.ca).

It all begins when a loose grouping of students issued a press release announcing that 15 schools were planning to defederate from the CFS:

http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/youth-issues/latest-drama-canadian-federation-students-cfs#commentsyouth issuesEducationCAFri, 06 Sep 2013 18:05:17 +0000Catchfire103302 at http://rabble-6.rabble.caThe Boy Who Played With Fusion!!!!!

http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/youth-issues/college-suspensions

I have never been a fan of institutions taking action against students for off-campus behaviour. See story below.

A college in London, Ont., has suspended eight students following St. Patrick's Day riots over the weekend that caused an estimated $100,000 damage and led to 11 arrests.

Howard Rundle, the president of Fanshawe College, told a news conference today the administration was taking the off-campus violence seriously and would be conducting its own investigation alongside police efforts.

Under the school's student code of conduct, Fanshawe can impose academic penalties on students whose off-campus actions might affect the health and safety of others in the college community.

http://rabble-6.rabble.ca/babble/youth-issues/college-suspensions#commentsyouth issuesMon, 19 Mar 2012 16:40:42 +0000Caissa91333 at http://rabble-6.rabble.ca
