In this monthly blog, KAIROS explores the social and ecological justice issues related to the extractive industry and watersheds, the rights of Indigenous peoples, women and migrant workers, and how to build movements of change. KAIROS brings awareness and offers insights on Canadian and global issues that are too often ignored.en11 wishes for 2017 that will make Canada greener, more just and more equal

When Pope Francis addresses the UN on September 25, how will his message resonate with Canadians?

In June, when droughts and forest fires plagued western North America, Pope Francis released his message on care for the Earth, our common home. He deplored the failure of corporations, governments and international summits to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are responsible for dangerous climate change that is impacting the world's most vulnerable people and species.

How do you "unlearn" a story that you thought was the truth your whole life? It doesn't happen overnight. The story needs to be retold from a different perspective. It may require multiple tellings in various settings. You need to understand the implications of the changes to the story on a personal and a societal level. And then you need to pass it on.

I didn't used to pay much attention to Earth Day. But as I became more and more alarmed about the damage being done to ecosystems vital to life on this planet, I began to explore Indigenous peoples' teachings on respecting Mother Earth. I learned that these teachings offer tremendous insight into living in harmony with our biosphere, particularly the principals of taking only what we need, and being conscious of our actions' impacts on seven generations to come.

This is what I also learned:

Indigenous peoples treat Pachamama or Mother Earth as a sacred living being. We humans are part of nature, not separate from it. All plants and animals are our brothers and sisters.

According to the renowned biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann "the key pathology of our time, which seduces us all, is the reduction of the imagination so that we are too numbed, satiated and co-opted to do serious imaginative work."*

Today, March 5, I am fasting for imagination. I want to feel hunger and thirst in a symbolic call for the "serious imaginative work" that is needed to address the current climate catastrophe. I am tired of the zero-sum game that says climate justice equals fewer jobs and ecological integrity means economic ruin. The leaders who accept this trade off demonstrate a huge failure of the imagination necessary to bring about green economies, clean energy strategies, and conservation that enhances true quality of life.
