April 29 was a national day of action to stop the reopening of the Mount Polley Mine in British Columbia.
Last August, 25 million cubic meters of toxic mining waste spilled in to the unceded Territory of the Secwepemc Peoples. The spill has disrupted their way of life. The toxic tailings have reached the Fraser watershed and the second largest salmon spawning grounds in the world.
Here in Toronto, 50 people gathered at noon outside the Toronto Stock Exchange on King Street.

From the Income Security Advocacy Centre's website:
Bill C-585 is a federal private member’s bill which has serious implications for the income security of refugee claimants and other people without permanent status in Canada. If passed, the Bill would allow provinces to restrict access to social assistance benefits for these groups by imposing minimum residency requirements for eligibility.
The Bill does this by eroding the last remaining “national standard” for the Canada Social Transfer which prevents provinces from imposing a minimum period of residency for social assistance eligibility.John Bonnar112986 http://rabble.ca/Fri, 05 Sep 2014 00:00:00 -0400John Bonnar Audio BlogBill C-585 could strip social assistance benefits from those without permanent status in CanadaFrom the Income Security Advocacy Centre's website:
