<p>Which comes first, racism or the systemic need for racism?</p>
<p>In all the reams of printed and digital discussion about Donald Trump's (attempted) ban on Muslims from seven countries, the murder of six worshippers at a Quebec City mosque and Islamophobia in general, few commentators have mentioned the economic roots of racism.</p>
<p>But the truth is ideas have always been needed to justify treating other people badly in the competition for wealth and power. As long as there have been battles over resources people have objectified and demeaned the Other to provide ideological cover and to motivate their side to victory.</p> <div class="read-more"></div>

<p>The Fraser Institute's Jonathan Fortier is up in arms. In an article in <em>The Fraser Forum</em> entitled "<a href="mailto:https://www.fraserinstitute.org/blogs/mary-poppins-song-dance-and-latent-socialism" rel="nofollow">Mary Poppins -- song, dance and latent socialism</a>," Fortier maintains himself to have been "struck by the film's latent socialist ideas and its implied attack on bankers and investment." <p>It takes about 15 minutes to walk from Mori-Ôgai Memorial Humboldt University in Mitte, Berlin, to the Hamburger Bahnhof -- Museum für Gegenwart. On Luisenstraße for two minutes, turning left on Charitéstraße and passing through what looks like a green, open-gated community -- the Campus Charité Mitte. The Campus hosts the Charité -Universitätsmedizin Berlin -- the largest hospital in Europe, the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, and the Berliner Medizinhistorisches Museum der Charité. I walked this route at some point in July. After leaving the grounds of the Charité Campus, it takes about a minute to cross the river on Invalidenstraße and turn right towards Hamburger Bahnoff.</p> <div class="read-more"></div>

<p>After taking office in 2011, Governor Rick Snyder decreed tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy and cuts pensions and "other efficiencies" to pay for them.</p>
<p>One of these efficiencies was to force residents to drink out of the Flint river instead of Lake Huron.
