After the federal approval of Kinder Morgan's controversial Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion (TMX), Alberta Premier Rachel Notley came to B.C. to sell the pipeline's economic benefits. She claims B.C. will get a $1 billion per year boost in GDP as a result of the pipeline, as well as thousands of jobs in both construction and operations once the pipeline is built.

There is good reason to believe, however, that the incremental income and employment gains for ordinary working British Columbians are likely to be substantially less. The project would lead to a small increase in total GDP in the province, but the main benefits are in the construction phase, and even there the benefits have been grossly inflated. In the long run, we can only bank on about 50 new permanent jobs.

What a year it was. Coming off of the maddening, disappointing and very scary U.S. election, it's too easy to look back and wish that we could have just fast forwarded from December 31, 2015 right to January 1, 2017.

But that's not the whole story. In many ways it was also a really good year. Admittedly, we have to work a little harder to lift our spirits in this holiday season than in other years. But we know that rabble listeners and readers know that these things happen in cycles. Better days are ahead.

Lots of work for us to do in the new year to help restore this planet to health and happiness. But for now, take a break and have a listen to some of our faves.

rabble radioVictoria FennerbuddhismenvironmentMeditationradio dramayear end 2016\world Social ForumArts & CultureEnvironmentFood & HealthThu, 22 Dec 2016 16:02:48 +0000Victoria Fenner127219 at http://rabble-6.rabble.caThousands pledge to fight Kinder Morgan in the streets

Justin Trudeau will soon announce his decision on Kinder Morgan’s plans to expand its Trans Mountain pipeline, and ship almost 900,000 barrels of oil per day down to Burrard Inlet in Vancouver. Thousands of people marched in Vancouver last Saturday to show their opposition to this pipeline expansion. In October, Ricochet Media hosted a presentation with five leading figures in the movement to oppose Kinder Morgan: Reuben George, Cecilia Point, Mary Lovell, Claris Figueira, and Brad Hornick.

The U.S. election was a chilling illustration of the atrocious state of public discourse. It doesn't bode well for a country once admired for leadership in education and science.

As public relations expert and former David Suzuki Foundation board chair James Hoggan writes in I’m Right and You’re an Idiot, "polluted public discourse is an enormous obstacle to change." How, he asks, do we "create the space for higher quality public debates where passionate opposition and science shape constructive, mind-changing conversations?"

On November 15 Wayne MacPhail from harrowsmithnow.com got to sit down with Dr. David Suzuki. That was just a few days after Donald Trump became president-elect. So, as you can imagine, they had a lot to talk about. They touched on environmental issues in a time when facts don't matter, about David Suzuki's life and even career choices he might have made. You can check out the full video interview Wayne did with Dr. Suzuki at harrowsmithnow.com.

rabble radio specialVictoria FenneractivismenvironmentharrowsmithnowlifeTrumpEnvironmentWorldThu, 17 Nov 2016 16:45:16 +0000Victoria Fenner126832 at http://rabble-6.rabble.ca
