We have all been horrified by the death of Soleiman Faqiri while in custody in Ontario, and are standing with the family to demand answers. Mr. Faqiri's death was the latest of fifteen deaths last year at a correctional facility, or at a hospital following a transfer from a facility, in Ontario. These deaths are the most awful consequence of the heedless expansion of the prison system over the past decade.

I am furious about Russia's actions during the previous United States election, mostly because I came to Canada from the United States and hate what Trump stands for. On Sunday, I listened to Michael Enright's essay on the inherent hypocrisy in this condementation given the history of election interference by the United States. I found the story interesting but found it one-sided--what about intervention by the former Soviet Union?? What about the other European powers?

A new report released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that the controversial extraction technique can have a major effect on the quality and quantity of drinking water resources available to nearby populations.

This is report is very comprehensive, and included meticulous analysis of more than 1,200 sources of information and data. It is also a complete reversal from a preliminary version of the report released in 2015, which plainly stated “no evidence that fracking systemically contaminates [drinking] water.”

The CCPA and ACORN have just released a comprehensive report on predatory lending. Over 250 ACORN members were survey and they discussed why they turned to payday lenders. The results also show that many have been denied access to very basic banking services — such as cheque cashing or overdraft protection — from traditional banks.

There are about 1,500 payday storefronts in Canada. More than half of them are in Ontario.

Today, I watched a bunch of middle schoolers on a field trip reduced a girl to tears because of words said in a language that I did not understand. It brought me back to this video, this amazing piece by a Norwegian charity organization called CARE. CARE campaigns for women’s rights and has recently released a short film drawing attention to how male culture today has the potential to promote violence or abuse against women.

Over two weeks ago members of the Anti-Chevron Committee Canada have attended Zone d’Action pour le Climat (ZAC) in Paris. ZAC was one of the alternative summits organized by Coalition Climat 21, as a counter response to COP21, during the last week of negotiations. Coalition Climat 21 is a group comprising over 130 civil society organizations, including labour unions, environmental NGOs and human rights associations.

ZAC unfolded in Stalingrad, a multicultural Parisian neighborhood, between the dates of December 7 and December 11 at Centquatre -- the headquarters of Coalition Climat 21.
