May I suggest "Indigenous" replace "aboriginal"? It's becoming the preferred term in many venues, and links to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. We've discussed this in passing at various points but probably not in threads that mods would notice.

I raised it last month when I opened this thread, but can't recall if I notified the mods.

It's overdue IMO, so I'm PMing them now.

Thanks, swallow.

ETA: Ok, message sent.

Interesting. My Native friends don't seem to care about labels as long as it isn't derogatory. And a lot of them call themselves 'Indian'

I avoid that word. But my Mohawk friends don't.

This is the thing about the 'left' that I understand conservatives wildly hate. This hyper-sensitive PC bullshit.

May I suggest that we (those who identify as left leaning) give up on trying to label everything to the point where we don't want to offend, not only the people we know and support, but ourselves.

Aboriginal,Indigenous. Nobody really cares. At least the people I grew up with,am friends with and who I still talk to.

The right have a point. And it's costing all of us alot of points when trying to expand and realize a left leaning society. Us on the left really turn people off with all the PC horseshit.

If you don't believe me,ask an everyday, ordinary Aboriginal/Indigenous person. I don't think they are as senstive to whether you refer to them as Aborigial or Indigenous or even Indian.

This is coming from my experiences with Native people. In fact, some of my Mohawk friends lean to the right, some to the left but all agree that their territories are Indian land.

I implore my commarades on the left to abandon hyper-PC crap. It doesn't do us any favours,it just feeds the right wing narrative.

I'm not especially offended by "aboriginal." Plenty of folks use "Indian" too. I'm just suggesting (not demanding) a possible name change for a forum. Rabble would be following the lead of the CBC and the government of Canada in making the name change. But if a change offends you, Alan, I won't press the point.

What swallow said. I give up.

And how many of the indigenous folks he grew up with still talk to him?

Ummm...quite a few thank you. Btw,the lazy remark sounds a little bit racist.

I'm not going to be lectured by a bunch of white people. It's such a joke. Any Mohawks out there in this forum? *crickets* Ojibwe? *crickets* Cree? * crickets*

Do you even know any Natives personally? Ever set foot on a Reserve?

Pff.   You're all a joke. So PC. No wonder the Left is so marginalized. A bunch of lilly white liberals trying to micro-manage labels and dictate terms and shaming people who are REAL.

I invite you to drive West on the 138 from St-Constant and look to your right and you will see in bold letters THIS IS INDIAN LAND.

As I said,I don't use that word. But friends of mine who happen to be Native call themselves Indian, not all the time but when we talk -- which BTW, we rarely talk about things where 'Indian' 'Native' 'Aboriginal' or 'Indigenous' come into the conversation.

I grew up with Native friends and I STILL have Native friends. So you can kiss my fucking ass, frankly. Your comment was and is condescending and totally void of fact.

I don't think insults towards Alan are necesary.

Mods - the thread is becoming a fight, maybe best to close it?

I agree. Who's going to PM the mods this time?

Done via flagging function.

Your wish is my command. Closed for excessive toxicity.
