I wonder if this "academic" (thought that was an adjective?...) could name a single Roman Catholic community today or in history where priests lacked unlimited sexual access to unwilling women or children. Mind you, I would imagine that's not what the "academic" would define as "abuse". The "academic" thinks providing priests with more women would solve some kind of problem. The only solution is depriving them of their political, economic, and cultural power.

The church also seems to have a hard time understanding that pedophilia is about abusing children.  Most of the scandals have involved child molesters.  Having a wife never stopped a single pedophile from offending.  The catholic church defends its pedophiles because a large proportion of priests were themselves abused by church officials who served as their mentors.  Hard to root out the perps when they are doling out the perks that go with networking in an extreme hierarchy. 

The asshole who abused me was promoted from a regular teacher and then to Vice Principal after he had been forced to change schools because of rumours of pedophilia.  The other Bazillions knew about him and he still progressed up the ranks and in the process was given unrestricted access to young pre-pubescent boys (his preference).  The discovery documents I read said he admitted to abusing hundreds of young men while he was in a treatment program.  I sued almost a decade after he had been sent for treatment and the church stonewalled my suit for 6 years and forced me to spend tens of thousands on lawyers and experts.

That old pedophiles network is the rot at the core of the church.

The celibacy rule should be abolished for other reasons(such as the fact that it costs the Church a huge number of potentially excellent priests...which is also why the ban on female priests should go), but no, it isn't likely to be a major contributor to the problem of pedophile priests.   There are few cases, in fact, of any men, anywhere, taking up pedophilia because they were frustrated in their need to have consensual sex with adults.    

Much more likely sources of the clergy sex abuse crisis stem from

1)The ways in which some young men, in preparation for the priesthood, are taken out of normal teenage socialization and educated in a peer culture in which the process of maturation is interrupted, leaving them in a state of intentionally arrested development;

2)The tendency of significant numbers of men who sense pedophilic impulses in themselves to seek ordination to the priesthood out of the belief that the celibacy requirement and the disciplinary structure of the Church will make it possible for them to control and suppress those impulses;

3)The converse tendency of other such men to seek ordination in the belief that the traditions of secrecy and lay deference to the clergy will allow them to act on those impulses at will, with few if any consequences;

4)The priority some in the Church(John Paul II being especially notorious in this regard)have placed on both maintaining the existing number of priests and "preserving the power of the Magisterium" over the protection of children from sexual abuse.

Even if he was talking about allowing women in the church to have more power and influence - something that would be good, quite independent of this - the church is actually moving in the opposite direction, even under the new boy's watch:

Not the only case of progressive elements being systematically quashed since JPII took control. 

I suppose Frances felt he had to throw someone under the bus as a concession. No surprise who it wound up being.

I question to what extent the "sin of suicide" contributes to this, by that I mean if you are raised within the church your body is not yours, it belongs to god and the church speaks for god.   This dogma, taught from infancy, is powerful, apparently even more powerful than the need to protect one's children.

As long as they have believers they will continue and while the number of believers may be decreasing here, they are moving into Africa and Asia where they will have new opportunities to victimize children.

In my view,  the catholic church is corrupt and it should be charged with crimes against humanity. 

Still, it's an idea I hadn't considered, and it would save the judicial system lots of time and valuable resources - so long as it's voluntary, of course, and done with dignity.

I agree. There is a long, well-documented continuing history of institutionalized child abuse within the Catholic church, it has managed to largely evade answer for.  The Abrahamic religions, with their male dominator god, generally tend to be violent, mysogynistic and anti-children. With theocratic powers and/or influence upon state affairs they become even more pernicious.  Whenever you encounter 'god gave this land to me' or 'a belief in the supremacy of god and the rule of law,' like our own 'Dominion', you just know it ain't going to be good, especially for women and kids...

Watching the Epstein video, it is appears that he sees being questioned as an annoyance that he must suffer briefly and given the consequences for his actions, he is correct. 

As for the prince, he too seems to fall into this category, simply because even after Epstein served his token luxury sentence the prince continued his friendship with him.  

These are people who know they can do whatever they want, to whomever they want, whenever they want.
