February 13 is the 70th anniversary of the day Alberta simultaneously won the lottery and started to watch everything go to hell in a handcart. February 13...Alberta's unluckiest lucky day.

In other words, 70 years ago, with memories of the Great Depression and the Second World War still very fresh in the minds of the province's population of about 800,000 souls, Leduc No. 1, a few miles south of Edmonton, struck oil and the whole world changed.

Cars didn't have seat belts back in 1947, so no one thought to say: "Fasten your seat belts!" But by gosh, they should've!

Like most Canadians, I'm so used to turning on the tap and taking a sip of water that I don't even think about what it would be like to live in a community without clean drinking water. It's almost unimaginable that my tap water could overnight become contaminated and no longer drinkable. But TransCanada's proposed Energy East project would create that risk for millions of Canadians.

The massive Nexen oil spill and the illusion of safety

Last week, Canada had one of its largest oil spills ever. And this was from a brand-new, state–of-the-art pipeline owned by tar sands oil company, Nexen. The spill is an important reminder of how misleading the oil industry's promises about safety are.

Report finds Kinder Morgan proposal violates First Nation legal principles

On May 26, the Sacred Trust, acting on behalf of the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation, released an 89-page Independent Assessment Report, about the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline. The comprehensive report, which incorporated the findings of six expert reports, conclusively opposes the pipeline proposal.

The proposal includes two pipelines and an expansion of the Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby. Kinder Morgan seeks to transport 890,000 barrels a day, in the two proposed pipelines between Edmonton and Burnaby. The terminal expansion would include an increase of traffic from 60 to 408 tankers per year.

Energy East would ship oil through Eastern Canada -- not to it

TransCanada has spent millions on advertising, desperately trying to convince Canadians that Energy East is about getting oil from Western Canada to eastern Canadians. In reality, evidence shows very little of the oil that could flow through the proposed pipeline would ever be used in our country. As our new video shows, Energy East is an export pipeline.
