John Tory, the right-wing mayor of the City of Toronto, has put forward a plan to help correct Toronto's budgetary deficit, and he's getting support from some progressive corners of the city.

Tory wants to toll two highways, and it's a hill (or two roads) that some progressives have decided to die on.

Perhaps it's a noble reaction. Only rich people drive, only suckers take the TTC, and in a city plagued with the WASPy morality of the 1800s, it makes sense that a policy of collective punishment should be shared broadly, regardless of how you commute.

Forget harm reduction. It seems anything that makes driving in Toronto an even more wretched experience should be embraced and generalized, even if it's a regressive flat tax that will hurt poorer people the most.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau marked the Paris climate agreement by committing to take on the "tough work that still needs to be accomplished both at home and around the world to implement the agreement." Part of that tough work will be re-orienting federal funding to stop making the climate crisis worse.

The Harper government will be using its $14-billion Building Canada Fund to help it win the October 19 federal election.

The Globe and Mail reports, "The Conservative government is preparing an infrastructure spending spree in the runup to the fall election, as federal and provincial sources confirm work is heating up to announce new projects under the New Building Canada Fund. ...The flurry of announcements will represent an attempt by the Conservative Party to bolster its image on the infrastructure file ahead of a campaign that is expected to focus heavily on issues such as traffic congestion and public transit."
