Women, abstracted: The political performativity of indignation

The Women's March on Washington was scheduled well in advance, to take place on January 21, right after the inauguration of the new American president. The idea was for all women to rally in solidarity for health and safety rights, at a time when the overall society marginalizes women and discursively regularizes interpretations of sexual violence.

Several cities followed suit and a March in Toronto was also organized. According to the event's Facebook page, about 13,000 attended. People gathered at Queen's Park, marched towards the U.S. Consulate and later to the City Hall, at Nathan Philip Square.

Obama has the power to protect undocumented immigrants from Trump's mass deportations

Donald Trump will soon sweep into the office of the U.S. presidency, buttressed by both houses of Congress firmly in Republican control. A wave of regressive executive orders and legislation are already being prepared to ensure that Trump's first 100 days effectively erase the Obama presidency. Where Trump was once the most prominent "birther," attempting to deny President Barack Obama's legitimacy with a racist campaign accusing him of being born in Kenya, Trump now will wield a pen to legally undermine Obama's legacy. But Barack Obama is still the president of the United States until Jan. 20, and retains the enormous executive powers that the office bestows.

Video: Tell Obama 'no to deportations'

On April 5, 2014 there were marches and demonstrations at 80 cities across the United States protesting the ongoing deportations of many people. Under the Obama administration over two million people have been deported -- the largest number of any U.S. presidency.
This is the march and gathering in front of the massive Eloy, Arizona private detention centre, which is completely dedicated to deportees. People marched 60 miles over three days to deliver their message for justice. 
There is a nationwide call that two million is too many -- asking President Obama to halt the mass arrests and deportation of undocumented immigrants.
The pressure will be kept on with many people going to Washington, DC for a massive protest.

Services without fear: Historic win for undocumented residents of Toronto

The Solidarity City Network issued the following statement last night after an historic vote at Toronto City Hall. 

 Thursday, after a marathon debate, Toronto City Hall strengthened its promise to provide services to residents without full immigration status or all their immigration documents. Read the exact motion here.
