We normally think of Pride events happening in big cities. However, in an effort to expand our understanding and experience of Pride, showing support for LGBQT who live in smaller communities, and maybe even dispel a few stereotypes about them, I thought I would start a thread about Pride events in smaller centres.
In particular, the small Manitoba city of Steinbach is having its first Pride parade next month. Why is this particularly noteworthy? Steinbach is in the heart of Manitoba's Bible Belt. A local pastor made headlines in his vocal criticism of the then-NDP government's anti-gay bulling bill and the local school division is being sued for not having adequate policies to protect LGBQT children following a meeting where trustees said crazy things. Brandon is also getting in on the Pride act and having its own Pride events.
So, other events happening in your small towns?

Estevan and Weyburn are holding their first pride celebrations next week. Surprised me more than Steinbach, because they are further from any big city.

This thread got me a bit curious about the small town I called home for a few years before leaving the nest, Dresden ON.
I didn't really expect there'd be a parade -- probably more people actually march in Toronto's parade than there are in Dresden in total, but I was happy to see that there's at least an LBGT organization out of Chatham that's making its existence known.
Small towns are so funny. A bunch of muscley guys gyrating on a float would probably result in a mass bashing or worse. But if two old "lifelong bachelors" decide to "share their living expenses", they might very well be the beloved neighbours that everyone turns to for tomato growing advice and suchlike.

The local Tory MP from Steinbach is asking for acceptance of his homophobia. Just like gay people have the right to be seen in public he has the right to proudly proclaim he hates gay people and would not support anything they do.

Well, I suppose we can't really argue with his right to not support something he doesn't support.
But if I'm not mistaken, his first RSVP was that he'd already commited himself to attending TurnipFest or whatever. And then, bless them, TurnipFest released him from his apparent legal obligations and said "no, go attend Pride because it's more important" and now he's on the spot.
Glad to see his honest Christian beliefs are nothing to be ashamed of, nothwithstanding the time he spent hiding behind TurnipFest, unwilling to mumble out loud that he was doing it to impress Jesus.

"Maria-Christine Bruce is the president of the Frog Follies Agricultural festival in St. Pierre-Jolys. She is calling on politicians to skip the event on July 9 and attend the Steinbach Pride parade instead."
