The Duel: Alberta NDP will hurt premier
It’s early days yet, but a successful NDP government in Alberta will show British Columbians their fear of the NDP is unwarranted - and that could spell bad news for the BC Liberals in 2017.
http://vancouver.24hrs.ca/2015/05/10/the-duel-alberta-ndp-will-hurt-premier
I think it's too early to determine what impact the Alberta NDP government will have on the 2017 BC election.
The way Alberta was perceived outside of Alberta will now create opportunities for the NDP right across Canada like never before. Voters will be thinking my goodness if the right-wing Albertans can handle a NDP government then what can be so frightening about NDP governents in Canada or in their respective provinces.
Five provinces and the Yukon have plenty of experience with NDP governments. They don't need to live vicariously through Alberta.
I think there will be other factors at play in the 2017 BC election besides just this.
If you want a BC NDP victory next time then send money to the BC Conservatives. The BC NDP has only won when it faced a divided right. But that is true for almost every time the NDP has won in this country. Unfortunately it is highly unlikely that Rachel will face a divided right wing in her next election.
The BC NDP is a tightly controlled non-democratic party that refuses to let any new blood into its ruling cabal that is not subservient to the party elite. Until that changes the right wing attacks on the party will resonate with too many voters.
To put it into persepective. Dave Barrett won in 1972 with 448,260 votes and then lost in 1975 with 505,396. In 1972 running against the Cons, Libs and Socreds they won 38 out of 55 seats. In 1975 with more people voting for them than in 1972 they only won 18 out of 55 because the money dissappeared from the Cons and LIbs and the right wing vote all went back to the Socreds.
If you listen to the right wing media you would think that the Barrett goverment lost supporters because of their radical politics but in fact those politics got them more voters but not a majority.
If the BC NDP and BC Fed had not actively opposed the second referndum on STV we would not have Christy Clark as Premier. Of course the central office cabal thought they would win the next election and get a phoney majority and that was what they were playing at. In doing so they fucked us all.
I strongly don't think that will happen, at least not for the next decade. The PCs got 28% of the vote and the Wildrose 24% to the NDP 40%. They only need small up ticks in support to win, while the NDP growth potential will hit a cap (if it hasn't already). The right-wing is much stronger here than in any other province. There is no need to "unite the right" - Conservative Albertans would be smart to keep two Conservative parties unless they want to repeat the increasing corruption that has come with the Conservative dynasties of the PCs and Social Credit in power for decades.
I agree with you on BC largely. The absence of a Conservative party in BC only helps the BC Liberals (in name only).
Who knows the Alberta Cons may do what the Sask Cons did and just fold the party on the orders of their corporate masters. At minimum the money for one of the two parties is going to dry up.
The first thing the Alberta NDP needs to do is change the election finanacing laws and actively promote PR and then have a democratic 50% + 1 referendum during the next general election.
The BC NDP central cabal opposed PR and didn't chage the election financing rules and we are paying with a permanent neo-con government.
BC might be the one place where the Alberta upset won't have any effect. People here aren't scared of voting NDP, as the polls showed last election before the bottom fell out. The party is just timid and confused and keeps blowing their advantage in each election.
Notley ran such an excellent campaign that it overcame the wariness of Alberta voters to support the NDP. In BC, they've run such poor campaigns that it overcame the wariness of voters to re-elect the BCLiberals.
BC is the one place in Canada where the public perception of the party as an option actually runs ahead of their abilities. They don't need a PR boost. They need to get their shit together.
BC NDP had better pray no LNGs proceed for if they do, the BC NDP may as well fold up shop.
The Tyee had a piece about the differences between the BC NDP and the Alberta NDP. One of the factoids thrown in is something to remember. Since 1941 the NDP/CCF has been either the official oppostion or the government.
Send money to the BC Conservatives not the BC NDP since what they really need is a second right wing party running. That was the case in all three of its wins in the last 60+ years since becoming official oppostion.
All the more reason the BC NDP should have been behind PR from the get go!
It's difficult to overstate what a pile of right-wing foaming at the mouth nonsense this is and which passes for journalism in Canada today.

Weaver's just grandstanding again - why doesn't he focus on Victoria's sewage which is in his own back yard and a blight on our country.
Strange that Viictoria's harbour is a pig sty because of its untreated sewage and that is where the Greens are concentrated. What does that tell you?
Oh and by-the-way this has been NDP policy for years so Weaver's quite late coming to the party which is not going to happen with the BC Liberals in power.

Press Pass: Clark ready for her surveillance closeup
The Opposition ran some electronic countermeasures on Premier Christy Clark recently, but didn’t turn up much. She was on her feet speaking during question period and holding a sheaf of notes in her hand. The Opposition obtained the video feed of the appearance, got a screen grab of the notes, and enlarged the picture.
Lo and behold, the grainy image of the front page of the document was headed “NDP Counter Attack.” It had some handy references to things like “Horgan’s favourites” (Opposition leader John Horgan’s end-of-year listing of his five best MLAs has been an endless source of amusement for the government), and “NDP on balanced budgets.”
Those topics are familiar themes for all cabinet ministers during question period, which suggests everyone has the same cheat sheet.

Christy is a great campaigner I'll give her credit for that. The problem is Clark is always in campaign mode.

Clark has got to be one of the biggest flakes as a premier Canada has ever seen.
