Hi everyone,

Until I can change the settings in our policy statement, I just wanted to let everyone know not to bother sending e-mail to babble@rabble.ca. That account is pretty much non-functional now due to the hundreds and hundreds of spam per day that floods the account.

So, if you need to reach a moderator, write to oldgoat or I at michelle(AT)rabble(DOT)ca, or oldgoat(AT)rabble(DOT)ca. I've also put that as a line at the top of the front page so that people will notice it. I'm sorry, I know it doesn't look beautiful, but I just want to ensure that people who don't have accounts but want to write to us will see it.

Thanks!

one problem: now that you have pubicly posted your mods e-mails, will YOU now get the same millions of spam e-mails??
or,
will not using the @ (at) symbol save you that headache ?

I'm hoping that the way we've posted them (without the @) will save us those problems. I mean, we have to post our e-mail addresses somewhere.

It's such a pain!

You could post them as images.

I believe much of that so-called spam is not as innocent it may appear. Particularly when heaped on those with whom you correspond overseas, I suspect a sabotaging effort. I will leave others to speculate as to beneficiaries.

With privacy an illusion, perhaps it's better to have no address book in the computer at all. A big pain, I agree, particularly to those who send large mailings.

I wonder, if one could not operate without the attached addresses, whether substituting the period, say, for a slash in the address book might thwart intruders. It would still be a chore to edit those addresses before hitting "send".

ETA

I,ll email this thread to a brother in New Zealand (will try at least) to let him know that we are not alone with email problems.

I've switched to webmail myself, in an effort to deal with spam, etc.. My old Operating System isn't properly supported by my Internet Service Provider so I get them to do the heavy lifting online. So far, so good.

Cheer up: I got this really great lead from someone who wants to smuggle millions of dollars into Canada. All you have to do is front him some bank charges, and you can cash in big time. I've taken the liberty of passing along your e-mail address.

Strangely enough, I've moved beyond e-mail spam. I'm now getting Nigerian postal spam - I was offered 34 million dollars last week, through my mailbox, delivered by Canada Post.

Are you serious? Through the mail!?

There's a great commercial that I saw on CNN, where they show some guy approaching someone in, I think, a restaurant, introducing himself as so-and-so, saying he has a lot of money he wants to bring into the country, and that he needs help and blah blah, basically saying the script of one of these scams. The guy he approaches hears him out and then tells him to buzz off.

The voiceover says that you wouldn't trust someone who tried to scam you in person, and that's why they send it to you by e-mail. I thought it was an interesting public awareness commercial!

How do I reach a moderator now? There is a Liberal Party shill who is accusing me of "screeching hysterically" and insinuating that I am a "bigot" (because I'm Québec solidaire and we support Québec independence? We have ALWAYS supported Indigenous nation self-determination and rights, the contrary is simply a lie).

Just a sample of this sexist, Colonel Blimpish shit:

lagatta: Once again you are screeching hysterically against people on the left who point out that your values are far from progressive.  And once again you obscure the salient point.  Quebeckers (sic) absolutely have the right to self-determination, and so do First Nations (I have Cree and Métis family myself).

I guess this thing, who supports the BOURGEOIS Liberal Pary over the very moderate but somewhat social-democratic NDP, thinks it is on the LEFT????

This sort of crap from the class enemy really shouldn't be allowed on a progressive forum. I've been an activist for over 40 years.

Thanks Meg, though here you've already seen my complaint about some fairly gross sexism and insinuation that I was some kind of bigot.
