Next Federal NDP Leader
It likely depends on how bad things turn out tonight and how many loses the NDP takes tonight, but I think we all know someone was going to start a thread like this.
Personally I'd be sad to see Tom go, I really like and respect the man and he would have made a legendary Prime Minister, and it breaks my heart that will never see that day, but I've had my heart broken in politics before and likely will again.
To stay Tom likely needs to get 25% of the national numbers and dominate Quebec, even then his staying isn't certain.
I have no regrets in supporting him fir leader, anyone else and we'd be in single digits.
So in the Event that he doesn't who do you see replacing him?
I'm thinking Alexander Boulrice, if he keeps his seat, would likely make a good leader if he can dodge the ghosts of seperatism past.
Who ever it is will have to be able to appeal in Quebec which cuts down on the rest of Canada choices. Not to zero, but it eliminates alot of choices.
Peter Julian or Nathan Cullen perhaps.
Chow will be likely to win her seat back so that might be out.
Boulerice, Leslie (if her French is good, and if she actually survives.) Julian is a snooze. Cullen's rapprochement with the Liberals was pointless. If, for some reason, the NDP gets wiped out in Québec, then Charlie Angus. That guy was your next leader...until 2011 happened.
Niki Ashton would be an inspired choice.
Well we agree on one thing besides the importance of water to humans
No offense, but I'll count as a strike against her, given your just posting in this thread to kick us while we're down.
Nathan Cullen wouldget my vote.
First let's see if it's a majority, because if it's a minority then the NDP makes itself irrelevant. Having said that, if Trudeau does come in first and Harper steps down, that will buy the NDP some time, but the party would have to move quickly. If it's a majority the party has a little more breathing room.
I have been talking about her as a potential leader for the last couple days.... She would be a good choice.
At this rate, will the NDP even have a seat in the HoC?
Whomever it will be,they will be younger...
Possibly, I like Nikki, I guess I should hold Pondering against her. Still I don't know if we can sell Nikki in Quebec, I know its not far, but who ever we chose has to be able to win over and become highly respected in Quebec, possibly very quickly, that means either someone that we know can have massive charisma like Nathan Cullen or has good Charisma and comes from Quebec. And survives the night with thier Career in tact. That will severely limit our choices. Hell at this point I don't know if Nikki will keep her seat, she did lose to a Liberal once before.
The only two sure ones are Vancouver East and Nathan Cullens..
Pierre Ducasse ran in the '03 leadership race....Is he available?
I'm pulling for Boulerice.
We need to shift left, hard (at least by Canadian measure), and I believe he could be the one to do it.
Going to the Left is a good idea...The reason is pretty simple..It's because there is a shift of consciousness goig on about the last 35 years of the prevailing economic ethos..Bernie Sanders popularity is one point of light...And frankly, the Liberals aren't going to go to the Left at all as they are going to maintain the economic status quo..And probably for the next 4 years...And speaking truth to power about this is going to be very important...
The party members will not hold losses this time against the next leader. But they will want a generational change.
Niki speaks 5 languages.
I agree, I'm leaning towards Alexanxer Boulrice myself, if he survives.
Megan Leslie will be back I assume in the next election.
Nathan Cullen is impressive but his big thing in the leadership race was cooperation with the Liberals. That doesn't make too much sense now.
true now but at the time it did. I think he would be a great PM.
Pondering, I have no interest in who you think should lead the NDP.
I want Tom to stay. The NDP doesn't knife its leader in the back like the LIbs and Cons. Give your heads a colletive shake folks. For my money, the question I want to ask is what the hell is the matter with all of you? Buck up! Buck up, get a grip! Chirst, what the hell is the matter with all of you? WHY are you playing thsi silly game for the Liberals Buck up; remember what Jack said, "don't let them tell you it can't be done"! Come on! Buck up now!
Peter Julian. Fluently biligual with a strong understanding of Quebec. Hopefully, Quebec still holds a good number of MPs for us.
Cullen is Mulcair with less hair. They need to distinguish themselves from the Liberals by moving back left.
A defeat I can handle, something like what happened to Andrea Horwath, but this is looking like it could be Adrian Dix territory.
The question is can Mulcair survive such a defeat. I'm not against him staying, he's been a good leader, until about Septermember where he listened to bad advise. At the very least Brad, McGrath, and co. are done, they're advise helped collaspe the house that Jack built.
If this had been another time period, but alot of people had expectations this time and dreams, so I don't know if Mulcair will stay, but if he does there will have to be massive changes and self reflection.
Yet Tom has lost all that Jack built. The NDP could be back to a third party rump party after tomight.
I respect you're loyalty AC, but this is a major route, not a set back and I don't know if Tom is the right leader for the Bernie Sanders/Corbyn era.
So? My old man never folded as a New Dem, and neither will I. Screw the Libs! Screw the Cons! Ready? Aye! Ready!
It's just Atlantic Canada this point. Liberals were always sky high here. We'll see how the rest of the country votes.
