Atlantic Jewish Council doesn't speak for all Jewish Haligonians on Pinkwashing

The Atlantic Jewish Council (AJC) took over Halifax Pride's Annual General Meeting the evening of October 5, packing it with over 200 people, an action that one Palestinian activist likened to "an occupation."

Halifax Pride is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer (LGBTQ+) association whose main activity is organizing that city's Pride Week every July. The AJC is the mainstream body that claims to represent Halifax's 1,500 Jews.

The coup d'état that happened at Wednesday's Halifax Pride meeting is an important warning for progressives everywhere -- our organizing work is never finished.

I won't get into the details of the meeting. El Jones was present and her take is in-depth and required reading if you're following the saga.

What I'm more interested is the weaponization of free speech over the course of this debate.

Free speech is a fundamental value of Western society, just like democracy and equality among citizens. There are elements of free speech that are critical and must be defended vigorously.

27th Annual Halifax Pride Parade – Each year the collective creativity, talents, and energy of our Halifax communities come together to wow the world, all while celebrating the diversity and variety of life here in the HRM.

Halifax Pride launched the 27th Annual Halifax Pride Festival with a call to celebrate the theme, “Once Upon a Pride.” This year’s celebration of LGBTQ+ culture and diversity runs July 17 to 27, 2014, featuring numerous local performers and artists. The festival is packed with events participants have come to love, along with new offerings created to inspire the community to come out for another fantastic eleven days of Halifax Pride.
