Canada Post 'has no problem lying to the public' says CUPW president

"We're extremely disappointed with the behaviour of Canada Post at the bargaining table," Mike Palecek, president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) told rabble.

During CUPW's media conference on Tuesday, Palecek sat down with rabble for a one-on-one interview to discuss Canada Post Corporation serving 50,000 workers a lockout notice, its refusal to negotiate fairly and address the real issues, and misinformation that has been circulating in the public.

"We're dealing with an unscrupulous employer. They have no problem lying to the public and they have been untruthful about the real [financial situation] facing Canada Post for years," Palecek told the crowd.

We have all been told that Canada Post is facing an impending crisis and that there is no alternative but to simply accept dramatic price increases, the end of home mail delivery and the loss of 8,000 living-wage jobs. We now know that this is a lie. A recent Access to Information request to Canada Post reveals that the crown corporation spent four years studying the idea of postal banking, declaring it a "proven diversification strategy." Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his fiscal enforcer, Jim Flaherty, may have handed Premier Kathleen Wynne the keys to a magic kingdom. But this is not some Disney fantasyland. Rather, it is the world of majority government in Ontario.

The two keys the federal Conservatives have given the minority Liberal premier are, first, a popular election issue and, second, a convincing enemy to stand against.
