Last January, KAIROS released its wish list for the year -- 10-plus-one hopes for the federal government and the provinces to fulfill. Two of these were realized: the Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls was launched and a national, rising price on carbon that integrates with provincial carbon pricing mechanisms was announced.

Reconciliation requires recognizing rights-based fishing

Fishing is as emblematic to Canada as ice hockey. It's also a way of life with a long tradition in coastal Indigenous communities. But since European contact, it's been all but eliminated as an economic development opportunity for them.

As Canada struggles to come to terms with reconciliation, court cases are helping define what Indigenous rights and title mean in day-to-day life. If the federal government is serious about its commitment to a new and respectful relationship with Indigenous peoples, it should set the tone through policies that address historic injustices, such as in commercial fishing practices.

National Aboriginal Day was first proclaimed by Governor General Roméo LeBlanc in 1996 to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada.

Duncan, B.C.-based writer Jennifer Manuel created an online campaign asking Canadians to pledge to read the entire 380-page document. Manuel calls it The TRC Reading Challenge. When she began in April, she hoped to have just 1,000 people sign on, but over 3,000 have already done so. Read the report and then let's support the TRC's demands for change.

Hello Rabblers,

As this year comes to a close and a new one is about to begin, rabble.ca has taken on an ambitious project and it would like all of you to join in on its New Year's resolution.

rabble.ca has partnerered with Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto to launch a campaign that I know people will know is close to my little heart.

On Tuesday December 15th, the Truth and Reconciliation commission issued its final report. Trudeau committed to implementing its recommendations in June 2015 when he saw the document in bullet point format. The only way this will really happen, however, is if let the government know that we want true reconciliation, and a better future.

The report cites residential school survivor Alma Mann Scott who said:
